The 1745 village
Hello, my name is Thomas Guillot and I am a spoon moulder. I wander from village to village, selling or repairing metal cookware. Today I arrived in the village of Nicolet, which is located at the juncture of the Nicolet and the St. Lawrence Rivers. In the distance I can see the steeple of the new church.
Listen carefully and you will hear the sound of the blacksmith’s hammer hitting metal. He must be making horseshoes. As you approach the village, you can smell the delicious aroma of freshly baked bread coming from the bakery. Look way over there and you might be able to see the miller hard at work at his mill. While I’m here, I will have the village tanner prepare some skins so that I can make myself some new shoes.
In Nicolet, there is a shop where people can buy firearms, glassware, pottery, luxury items and cutlery, wine, brandy, coffee, chocolate and playing cards, not to mention clay pipes. Pipes are very popular because people like to smoke. However, they need to be replaced often because they break easily.
People come to the village to sell their surplus crops. Then they have enough money to buy all the things they cannot make themselves.
